As part of its ongoing bridge replacement program, the West Virginia Department of Transportation contracted with Randolph Engineering to design a replacement bridge and associated roadway widening for the existing bridge spanning CSX Railroad near the town of Culloden, WV. The existing bridge was rated structurally deficient and functionally obsolete due to inadequate clear width.

Founded on fully integral abutments and solid shaft piers the new bridge consists of three spans utilizing hybrid High Performance Steel, Grades 70 and 100 with a composite cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. The bridge was designed with a clear width of 48’ to allow for staged construction and allows for a future turn lane. The bridge is located in a tangent section of roadway and is on a skewed alignment. The scope of services included 1300′ of approach roadway as well as R/W Plans, Storm Water Management and Utility relocation.

To reduce the overall impact of the footprint four retaining walls were utilized along both approaches.

Surveying services included horizontal and vertical control as well as topographic mapping.

Construction Cost:  $2,700,000.00
