As part of its ongoing bridge replacement program, the West Virginia Department of Transportation contracted with Randolph Engineering to design a replacement bridge for the existing two-lane concrete slab bridge spanning Newcomb Creek in Wayne County, WV. The existing two-lane, single-span concrete bridge had poor sight distance and was rated structurally deficient due to severe deterioration.
Founded on integral abutments, the new bridge consists of a single span of 72’-0” utilizing 4-lines of 36” welded steel plate girders for the superstructure with a composite, reinforced concrete deck. The bridge width is 34’-6” out-to-out and is located on a tangent alignment and on a 0-degree skew. The bridge is located on the original alignment, thus requiring a temporary detour bridge. To improve the sight distance and facilitate the temporary bridge detour, a rock outcrop had to be cut back while using caution to avoid damage to a private cemetery.
The scope of work included approximately 150′ of approach roadway, utility relocations, as well as the development of R/W plans, which involved CSX Railroad. Post design services included shop drawing review.
Surveying services included horizontal and vertical control as well as topographic mapping and hydraulic cross-sectioning of the stream.
