As part of its ongoing bridge replacement program, the West Virginia Department of Transportation contracted with Randolph Engineering to design a replacement bridge for the existing two-lane concrete slab bridge spanning Clear Fork in McDowell County, WV. The existing two-lane, single span concrete bridge was rated structurally deficient due to severe deterioration.
Founded on integral abutments the new bridge consists of a single span of 34’-0” utilizing 4-lines of 17”x48” Pre-stressed Concrete Box Beams in a spread formation for the superstructure with a composite, reinforced concrete deck. The bridge width is 35’-4” out-to-out and is located on a tangent alignment and on a 0-degree skew. The foundations consisted of fully Integral Abutments founded on pre-drilled steel piles. The bridge is located on the original alignment, thus requiring staged construction.
The scope of work included approximately 50′ of approach roadway on each end, utility relocations, as well as the development of preliminary and final R/W plans. Post design services included shop drawing review.
Surveying services included horizontal and vertical control as well as topographic mapping and hydraulic cross sectioning of the stream.
