As part of its ongoing bridge replacement program, the West Virginia Department of Transportation contracted with Randolph Engineering to design a replacement bridge on the existing alignment for a very high traffic volume bridge spanning Crooked Creek located in Point Pleasant, WV. The existing bridge was rated structurally deficient due to significant section loss to the steel superstructure members as well as the condition of the reinforced concrete deck.
Founded on integral abutments the new bridge consists of a single span of 140’ utilizing grade 50W steel with a composite cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. The bridge has a 39’ clear width and provides a 5’ sidewalk on the upstream side. The new bridge is located on a tangent alignment and on a 10-degree skew. The bridge was replaced at its existing location thus requiring a combination of staged construction and an approximate 1- mile detour that utilized city streets. Additional responsibilities included R/W Plans and Utility Relocation Plans.
Surveying services included horizontal and vertical control as well as topographic mapping and hydraulic cross sectioning of the stream. Post design services included shop drawing review and approval.
