Project Description

As part of its ongoing bridge replacement program, the West Virginia Department of Transportation contracted with Randolph Engineering to design a replacement bridge on a new alignment for the existing bridge spanning CSX Railroad near the Town of Barboursville, WV. The existing bridge was rated structurally deficient and functionally obsolete due to inadequate clear width and significant deterioration to key structural components.

Founded on integral abutments supported on retaining walls of various configurations, the new bridge consists of a single span utilizing Grade 50W steel with a composite cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. The bridge spans 118’ with a clear width of 34’ and is in a reverse horizontal curve and flared along one approach. The design included designs for both abutments to be supported on M.S.E. retaining walls. However, the contractor chose to value engineer the wall at Abutment 2 to a pile and lagging retaining wall.

Additional responsibilities included R/W Plan and Temporary Traffic Control Plans.
Surveying services included horizontal and vertical control as well as supplemental topographic mapping. Post design services included shop drawing review.
