Project Description

As part of its ongoing bridge replacement program, the West Virginia Department of Transportation contracted with Randolph Engineering to design a replacement bridge for the existing one-lane bridge spanning the Mate Creek in the town of Matewan, WV. The existing one-lane, deck slab bridge was rated structurally deficient and functionally obsolete due to inadequate lane width and severe deterioration.

Founded on integral abutments the new bridge consists of a single span of 50’-0” utilizing a Prestressed adjacent concrete beam superstructure with an asphalt wearing course. The bridge is 36’-6” out-to-out width and is locate on a tangent alignment and on a 0-degree skew. Additional responsibilities required the removal and relocation of an existing pedestrian bridge during construction.

The scope of work included approximately 150′ of approach roadway as well as R/W, Temporary Traffic Control, and Utility Relocation Plans.

Surveying services included horizontal and vertical control as well as topographic mapping and hydraulic cross sectioning of the stream. Post design services include shop drawing review and approval.
