As part of its ongoing bridge replacement program, the West Virginia Department of Transportation contracted with Randolph Engineering to design a replacement bridge on a new alignment for the existing one lane bridge spanning the Bluestone River near the town of Montcalm, WV. The existing bridge was rated functionally obsolete due to inadequate clear width and sight distance.
Founded on solid shaft hammerhead piers and integral abutments the new bridge consists of three spans utilizing grade 50W steel with a composite cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. The bridge has a 38’ clear width and is in a reverse horizontal curve and skewed alignment. The project scope included approximately 600′ of approach roadway on a new alignment as well as R/W Plans and Temporary Traffic Control Plans for the project.
Surveying services included horizontal and vertical control as well as topographic mapping and hydraulic cross sectioning of the stream. Post design services included shop drawing review and approval.
