Triad Engineering, Inc., the construction manager for a $25 million dollar runway expansion project, contracted with Randolph Engineering to analyze a portion of the navigational (ALS) lighting system after an impact from construction equipment.
The project required a large embankment fill that encompassed portions of several towers that support the navigational lighting system. Upon completion of the impact analysis, it was noted that two of the support towers were showing signs of distress. Further analysis determined that these two towers would require a challenging retrofit to allow for settlement of the embankment fill. We designed the retrofit and developed a method of installing a new base connection that was to be constructed in-place at the new base elevation prior to removing the existing vertical legs of the tower.
This unique situation presented a challenge to the design team and was critical to the success of the overall expansion project.
